FORT GORDON, Ga (WRDW / WAGT) – There are noticeable changes near the new entrance to Gate 6 at Fort Gordon.
The new lights are flashing there in anticipation of the new doors opening this weekend.
Gate 6 opens on Saturday. It’s on Gordon Highway between Parham and Newmantown Road. When this door opens, doors 2 and 3 will close.
Soon tens of thousands of cars will be driving there.
The new traffic light that was flashing on Monday will begin to light red and green on Thursday.
And that, we are told, is the last word in a three-year package in the works.
Arthur Elam has seen a lot of change in his 20 years of living on Gordon Highway.
“It’s just bad. I mean, even the raccoons are gone. The possums are gone. There isn’t much left, ”he said.
He wasn’t a big fan of the road works at Gate 6 just outside his house.
“They played with the road. One day they paved it, the next day they laid more paving stones, ”he said.
But all of that work is about to be done. And all of this change means the Georgia Department of Transportation is asking you to be careful there.
“So in addition to going from two to four lanes, you’re going to have an active traffic light where you normally don’t have one. So people have to be very vigilant there, ”said Kyle Collins, spokesperson for DOT.
The light will be on Thursday.
And on the road to gate 2 which will be closed soon – “You won’t be able to do what these vehicles are doing right now. You have to either turn left towards Augusta or turn right towards the new gate. 6. “
The crews replenished this route on Saturday morning. After that, crossing the intersection straight on will no longer be an option.
“And we’re just asking people to be careful, to look up, to watch the signage, to watch out for the signals, the scratches, it’s going to be a lot different in this area later this week,” Collins said.
And GDOT hopes that those who care about their surroundings will ensure smooth stops, smooth turns and a smooth transition.
