CommBank Junior Matildas bound for Brisbane in preparation for AFF U18 Championships

Head coach Rae Dower’s extensive search for the next generation of female footballers will continue next week when the CommBank Junior Matildas travel to Brisbane for their final training camp.

The camp has been called following confirmation that Australia will take part in the upcoming AFF U18 Champions in Indonesia from July 22 to August 4, 2022.

This will be the CommBank Junior Matildas’ first international activity since taking part in the 2019 AFC Women’s U-16 Championship where they finished fourth in the tournament three years ago. It also marks the last Australian women’s national team to return to international action.

Dower has brought in a 28-man squad that includes several household names on the roster over the past three months. Additionally, four other players were given an opening to showcase their talents in the national team environment.

With Queensland having long been a breeding ground for women’s football talent, Dower is planning another five days of competition in Brisbane.

“We are very happy to continue development with this group of players who have worked hard in their respective club teams to be physically fit,” Dower said.

“It allows us to work at high intensity to help prepare the players for the rigors of international competition in a crowded tournament. Much of the credit goes to the United States and their respective program staff who have done a magnificent job in preparing the players.

“There have been very trying circumstances with so much rain and the postponement of matches across the country, so congratulations to the member federation staff. The level of collaboration with Pathway programs across the country is very good and we are seeing a positive impact on players and their continued development.

The recent camp call-ups bring the number of CommBank Junior Matildas age group players involved in national team activities to 64, with 56 attending the U17 assemblies and another eight progressing to the CommBank Young Matildas level.

“This upcoming camp in Brisbane gives the players another opportunity to push for the final selection of the AFF U18 squad and the upcoming tour to Indonesia,” she continued.

“Fortunately, there are so many outstanding young players in the squad that it is very difficult for the coaching staff and me to come to the final selection.

“With the exciting news that the National Youth Championships are returning in 2022, it will give all of these aspiring players another opportunity to compete against the best in the country and advance their careers.”
