Gardening tips: A ‘crucial’ way to make plants ‘thrive’ using ‘common household products’

When it comes to fertilizing garden plants for those with freshly green fingers, it can be difficult to know what works best. Typically, garden fertilizer will be reminiscent of a lot of store-bought chemicals. However, according to Jason White, Founder and CEO of All About Gardening, there are plenty of natural ways to make your own plant food “virtually free.”

Although plant fertilizer can be purchased at garden centers and stores, it usually contains chemicals and can be very expensive.

Instead, Jason listed three ways to naturally “fertilize” garden plants to make them thrive.

The expert suggested using “kitchen scraps” as a “crucial” way to feed plants.

Jason told Express.co.uk: “Kitchen scraps in general are healthy and virtually free fertilizer when added to compost.

“Kitchen scraps are full of many nutrients from the different items they contain.

“It helps the garden soil retain healthy moisture, which is crucial for vegetable gardens, especially in the hot, dry season.”

These scraps include food scraps and fruit and vegetable peelings.

Banana peels are a great addition because they don’t contain nitrogen, making them a good organic fertilizer.

Additionally, banana peels are rich in potassium and contain calcium and phosphorus, which are beneficial for fruit trees and flowering plants, especially roses.

Vegetable peelings such as leftover greens, citrus zest, broccoli stalks, and potato peels contain nutrients that, when added to your garden soil, can provide vitamin A and C to your plants.

To prepare the eggshells, grind them with a blender, grinder or mortar and pestle and press them into the ground.

Because it takes several months for eggshells to break down and be absorbed by a plant’s roots, it is recommended to bury them in the ground in the fall.

More seashells can be mixed into your soil in the spring.

For those who drink coffee instead of tea, used coffee grounds are great for fertilizing soil and providing plants with antioxidants.

Jason explained, “Used coffee grounds are an everyday product that most people have on hand and it acts as a very healthy fertilizer.

“It has a ton of plant-healthy nutrients like potash, phosphoric acid, and nitrogen.

“Coffee grounds are especially healthy for fruit trees, evergreens and roses.”

Coffee grounds work by lowering soil pH, but only if they are left unwashed.

Used coffee grounds that have been rinsed with water tend to have a pH closer to 6.5, which may not have as big of an impact on the soil.

Coffee grounds add organic matter to the soil, which can help with water retention, aeration, and drainage.
