With summer in full swing, many of us are spending a lot more time and money maintaining our gardens. With the endless war on weeds, an endless need for more pots and expensive single-use fertilizers, the nation’s favorite hobby can also be expensive.
After the Mirror reported on a Manchester woman’s cheap homemade weed killer, a mix of white vinegar, salt and washing up liquid, some of our green-fingered readers shared some of their favorite homemade weed killers. Cheaper options like pure lemon juice or double-strength vinegar have all been suggested as ways to cut gardening costs.

It is important to note that these DIY solutions do not contain some of the harmful industrial chemicals that shop fertilizers can contain. Common weed killers like Round-Up typically contain glyphosate, a broad-spectrum plant killer that could cause cancer as well as greater damage to the food chain.
With the ONS reporting that gardening supplies have seen inflation rise by 9.7% over the past year, finding ways to cut some gardening expenses is key in the current cost of living crisis .
